Melancholia

So last night, snuggled up in bed with a glass of wine, I started watching the Kirsten Dunst/Alexander Skarsgard/Kiefer Sutherland, movie Melancholia.

A dreamily filmed movie. A wedding reception gone awry. A planet called Melancholia on a collision course with Earth. A soundtrack that makes you want to cry because it alternates to silence too frequently. The expansiveness of a golf course at night. A bride who seems so sad and a groom who seems so dumbly hopeful. The most artsy film I've seen in a long time.

That's sadly as far as I got before I fell asleep. Not that the film was boring. It was just so damn dreamy (I know, I've used that word before but if you watch this movie you'll see what I mean) that I just drifted.

Hoping to re-watch it again Just finished watching it so I can provide a semi-helpful review. The remainder of the long film (2 hrs, 10 min) did not speed up or perk up in any emotional way. As a matter of fact, it just got more depressing. The end of days approaches. Too bad I didn't feel an emotional connection to any of the characters (though in fairness, none of them were emotionally available).  Visually, the opening was stunning and so was the ending. Other than that, Right now it just left me feeling hollowed and empty, much like Justine (Kirsten Dunst character).
