Easy Ways I Cultivate My Creativity

Right now I'm in a position I hate more than anything: I have the desire to get something done creatively but I have no idea what to write about. Or, as most normal, non-neurotic people call it, WRITER'S BLOCK. I am blocked creatively. I have a hit the proverbial wall of shit to write about and I have painted myself into it's dusty corner. Got it?

So what do I do to get inspired?

1. Pinterest/We Heart It. Looking at pretty things makes me want to make something pretty.

2. Work on my collage boards/scrap book. Again, looking thru old mags for pretty images and then finding ways to re-assemble them into something EVEN PRETTIER is creativity lite.

3. Freewrite. This has always been one of those activities that English teachers and writing books like to encourage. And they are right to do so. Simply write whatever pours out of you for a short and set amount of time (5 minutes is a good warm up for me) and don't stop until your time is up. You can usually find some good ideas to pull out of your freewrite exercise and expand on.

4. Walk Away. Sometimes you just need to get some space from whatever it is you are trying so hard to make. Inspiration often hits when you are doing something else. Just keep a notepad/camera handy to remember the details for later.

Other creativity helpers include listening to music, taking a nap, copious amounts of caffeine, going outside, trying something new, challenging yourself, playing games, solving puzzles and having an emotional breakdown (though I wouldn't recommend that last one).
